My friend and fellow Wichita Modern Quilt Guild member has started up her own blog. She has tons of fun crafty, recycle-y, sewing projects on her new site. She also has an Etsy shop and if you can believe this- she does it all and is only 15 years old. I was honored to be a guest blogger and give a short interview about my business and what got me started. Check out Maegan and World Shaking Designs...

Quilt Guild Challenge

Quilt Guild Challenge

on Feb 16, 2011 in Blog, contests, quilt, quilting, sewing, wichita kansas | 0 comments

The local traditional guild hosted a challenge. We picked up fabrics in November. Well, they are due this week. The challenge had to incorporate the orange or green (highlighted below).  A piece of brown and a piece of beige.  When you purchased your challenge bundle, you received either a green or orange- I sat next to a lady who received the color opposite myself, so we half’d our pieces and incorporated both.   The challenge also had a to have 4″ diameter (or larger) circle in the design. We had to make our finished quilt under a certain size so that the collection of quilts could be considered for the AQS Knoxville Guild Challenge. You aren’t supposed to show anyone your quilt ’til its actually due. I was able to use only fabrics from my own stash to complete the top.  Isn’t it just wonderful that I have all sorts of funky colored stuff hoarded away?  hahaha. I think there will be a fair amount of entrants.  Once all the designs are collected, there’s some kind of vote or committe to see who will make it to the Knoxville round.  Though I love love my quilt, I know the ladies in our guild are crazy-talented.  We’ll see if it makes the cut.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.  =) I free motion quilted the quilt (which I guess I didn’t snap a photo of that) and the binding is brown and beige, with each color lining up with the opposite one around the edge.  (yep, no pic.) I’ll keep you...

Sewing Machine Guts

Sewing Machine Guts

on Feb 16, 2011 in Blog, quilt shop, sewing, wichita kansas | 0 comments

FINALLY a blog post on the sewing/design blog that my dad will like. =) I went to a sewing machine shop today to pick up a tiny post which holds the spool of thread at the top of the machine. Somewhere in the 6 moves in the past 11 years, it got lost or broken off or something. And, it never hurts to throw a few more bobbins into the shopping cart. I’m the last of the big spenders, leaving at under $5.00. While I was there, a sewing machine was in the operating room. I felt kinda bad. I’m sure its family was sad, too. I mean look at this poor thing. The cool thing is that the shop will probably have it up and running in a couple hours. I’ve never seen this FAR into an electronic machine. Who knew?! Very cool. And yes, the repair tech definitely thought it was crazy that I wanted a picture. Sorry for the quality, its a cell phone picture. But wow- circuit boards, wire, gear, parts, shiney stuff, dull stuff, oh it goes on and on. I was strangely fascinated by this machine. I thought you guys might want take a peek inside. (Sorry I don’t have the model number. Lets just say that is in the operating room privacy rules....

Seamingly Accurate Demo at a Local Quilt Shop

Seamingly Accurate Demo at a Local Quilt Shop

on Dec 7, 2010 in quilt shop, Seamingly Accurate, wichita kansas | 0 comments

I was so happy to be invited to demonstrate the Seamingly Accurate Seam Guide at Picket Fence Quilt shop, in Wichita Kansas. After the demo at the Common Threads Quilt Show, I learned to bring extra inventory. Thank goodness I did because this demo had the seam guides hopping of the shelf. In fact, I’m happy to report, I only have two left and need to re-order! The demo was part of a holiday open house. I have to say, there was a REALLY good turn out. My portion was 1/4th of an hour long free demo/class type deal, set up in the shop classroom. We each did our presentations twice, for two separate groups of ladies. Every chair was full and there were ladies standing in the back. This was my first time to demo the seam guide in a classroom-type setting. I’ve demo’d it plenty of times at shows, where people are walking past- some stopping some still walking. I was really nervous. You can’t really tell in the photo above, though. Who knows what I’m saying in that shot, but I thought y’all would like to see me making the silly face. And can I just tell you how wonderful it was to see this big display right when you walked into the shop??? LOVE IT! That quilt is the Quarter and Dime quilt pattern! It looks so lovely. Thank you for the support, Picket Fence!!! *Thanks to my 10yr old who took all the photos for...

Wichita Shop Hop!!!

Wichita Shop Hop!!!

on Oct 1, 2010 in quilt shop, wichita kansas | 1 comment

Its shop hop time here in the city. There are 10 shops on the quilter’s shop hop. I’m excited to hit up a few shops this Friday morning- but more excited to tell you about my shop hop experience before…. This time last year, I was at a McDonald’s. I kid you not. We were just moving to Wichita, closing on our house the day before. We did the “ooh- we finally have the keys, who cares if there’s no furniture, by God we have toilet paper and cell phones and that’s all we really need” camp-out, which meant we had to go out to grab breakfast. So- McDonald’s. While in McDonald’s I see this group of 3-4 ladies all with these embroidered + quilty denim jackets that say “Traveling Quilters” I told my hubbs that I had to go talk to them, because these were my people. He might have laughed, as the ladies were about 30 years my senior. So I ask them where they were traveling to- Turns out they had driven down from… um… Nebraska, I think, to attend the HUGE Wichita Shop Hop. Ooooh- shop hop, you say? On the very weekend I pick up the keys, you say? Going on right now, with special hours after you finish your McMuffin, you say? Hum…. ok. So one of the sweet ladies gave me her shop hop address guide. Well that was super sweet. So I head back to the house with the hubbs and kids.“Didn’t we want to paint before all our furniture arrives next week?”Sure, he says.“Well, I’m going to need to get the paints. I don’t trust you to pick them out.”Sure, he says.“I might be a bit.”Ok, we’ll be here, hanging out, he says. On the way to the paint shop (Lowe’s or Home Depot- who even remembers), I happened to drive past… what? WHAT’S THIS? Q.U.I.L.T.S.H.O.P. {{…. didn’t see that comin, did ya?…}} So I roll in there, look around. Honestly, at this point in my life this was the first real quilt shop I had been into in about 3 years. Korea didn’t have wonderful cozy small time quilt shops all over the place. And the small city in...

Intensity Kit

Intensity Kit

on Sep 21, 2010 in blogging others, quilt, wichita kansas | 0 comments

Hen Feather’s Quilt shop has made Intensity (RD2-008) into a Kit! This amazing quilt is on display at the shop and is made with Hoffman Batiks. Oh my goodness, it was so beautiful in person. I have my own pattern sample, which is a few years old- so seeing the NEW quilt up close in this pallet/fabric was unreal. AND KITS! It is an easy pattern to kit, since its made primarily with fat quarters and a small bit of cut yardage. I am also teaching the technique to make this quilt at Material Girl’s Quilt Shoppe on THIS Saturday, Sept 25th. Hopefully, I’ll see you out there. You’ll need to call the shop or stop by to reserve your spot. Thank you so...

Hen Feathers Quilt Shop

Hen Feathers Quilt Shop

on Sep 19, 2010 in blogging others, wichita kansas | 1 comment

I thought it might be fun to give you a shop tour of the shops around Wichita. I did a post on Material Girls, the newest shop in town. And now I’d like to show you Hen Feathers Quilt Shop. Click the pictures to see them larger. I really like this shop quite a bit. Not only is it my local, close shop, but its a wonderful friendly shop with great selection. The very first day I went to Hen Feathers was the annual shop hop last October. The staff was busy, but super nice and approachable. Let me tell you what separates Hen Feathers from the rest- For every quilt displayed on her wall, she has a kit for it ready to go. It saves the customer’s so much time. Its also cool that it pretty much guarantees she also has a certain bolt in the shop- if its in the quilt. Its a pretty smart practice. One thing about this shop is that they have an insane amount of flannels. Hen Feather’s has this wonderful new-to-me flannel that is printed to look like a heavy tweed coat fabric- but really its lovely quality quilter’s weight cotton. Brilliant. There’s also a range of batiks. I mean, so many batiks in all colors and shades. mmmmmm…… There’s always seems to be a seasonal section in the shop too. Right now, of course, its Halloween. Now check out this cool Jack-o-Lantern Cube Purse she made. Too cute! (In the lower left of the picture. The Cube Purse RD2-019) This shop also has a large selection of MODA cut pieces- layer cakes, charm packs and jelly rolls. They are all over the store and also displayed on this armoire. There’s a whole stack of Fandango by Kate Spain right there! Hen Feathers also offers many classes. They have a wide open class room area. Natural light and plenty of plugs. And in the growing trend of quilt shops with good sense- Hen Feathers also has a play area for the wee little ones. This is right in the front of the store, by the flannels, juvenile prints and baby prints. Thank you so much for adding in a spot for the kids!...

Material Girls Quilt Shoppe

Material Girls Quilt Shoppe

on Sep 9, 2010 in classes, quilt shop, Seamingly Accurate, wichita kansas | 0 comments

(logo image from Material Girls Quilt Shoppe Website) There’s a new girl in town- or should I say GIRLS. Our town has many quilt shops, but with an 800 active-member guild, there’s plenty of room for more quilt shops. The newest addition is Material Girls Quilt Shoppe. They hosted a grand opening grand party this passed weekend. I was there to enjoy the party. This is Jan and Jo. The run the place. They are super nice and its very clear they are loving their new job- And man, they can throw a party. It was really, pretty full of shoppers, by 10:30a. And it wasn’t even Saturday yet! Door prizes, shopping, snacks, shopping, drinks, oh and um… shopping… Lets check out the store, shall we: mmmmmmmmm…………………………… This shop has a HUGE selection of soft fabrics. I’m sure it all has different market names, per company but the Minki, snuggly soft stuff- tons of it. And I’m super happy to report that Material Girls Quilt Shoppe carries ReannaLily Designs patterns. (You can tell I’m happy because I have the big goofy grin in the picture.) Not only do they carry the patterns, but I’m going to be teaching Intensity on Sept 25th at 10-noon. {{Its the black and white quilt above my silly-self in the picture.}} You’ll see how the Seamingly Accurate seam guide can make the half-square triangles in a snap and learn some scrappy techniques for this fat quarter friendly pattern. Click my classes tab, or head over to the MGQS link to get signed up. Let me show you my absolute favorite part of the store- more favorite than the 5000+ bolts, the class and awesome loft-like layout- yes- more favorite than that: They have a whole center for kids. Its adjacent to a sitting area, in the middle of the store, right by the cash wrap & cutting table. The sitting area has wicker furniture for adults and a whole set for the little people. Can I just say, thank you. I wish more quilt shops would recognize that, yes, sometimes young people with kids would like to give ridiculous amounts of money to your shops. {{This is a huge peeeve for me.}} To see...
