Are you ready? Do you want to have a handmade holiday but lack the time? I’ve got some GREAT news! TUESDAY kicks off the NEW Small Sewn Gift Sew-Along This all came about when the San Antonio Modern Quilt Guild announced it’s December Small Sewn Gift swap. I started looking online to come up with some inspiration. Wouldn’t you know, the internet is crazy inspiring! I worked on Pinterest and found many pictures. I decided I would try to make them all. Once I started working, I thought, shoot- I should just take some photos and share them with the blogosphere. The sew-along was born. Basically, I only two restrictions- I used only fabric I had on-hand and the projects had to be made in 20-30 minutes. I even have some bloggy friends in on the Small Sewn Gifts extravaganza. ? QuiltCon Raffle Quilt Block PATTERN

QuiltCon Raffle Quilt Block PATTERN

on Mar 5, 2013 in Blog, book, pattern, sewing, tutorial | 0 comments

If you missed it at QUILTCON 2013, I passed out a few postcards while I walked the show. It is an adapted version of the quilt block I submitted to the QuiltCon Raffle Quilt. My block was accepted. It was tricky to make (see here), so I remade it in a much much much easier fashion. Here’s the free block pattern postcard right here on the bloggity blog for your stitching pleasure. Click on the image to download a pdf with both postcard sides featured. The block is made using a simple shape-facing technique and machine applique methods. Incidentally, these methods are the main focus of one of my new books, Learn To Sew Easy Curves, published by Leisure Arts. Check your local quilt shop for the title as...

Freebies at QuiltCon

What will I have to give away at QuiltCon???? It looks like lots of guilds and businesses are making up a little something to hand out. Just look for me and my HOT TAMALES (San Antonio Modern Quilt Guild) Tote bag to receive you gift. Oh goodness, I will tell you- I will have a postcard with quilt block directions for a super simple applique block almost identical to my block in the QuiltCon Fundraiser quilt. The rules for that block for the quilt was that it be pieced… Turns out, pieced is REALLY hard to make, so I whipped up directions to make this block using faced applique shapes and stripe fabric. Easy-Peasy, and very customize-able. Each block will be unique and can be made to fit any size. OOOH- and there might just be a sneak peek at a book cover releasing this April on my block directions. More info on that coming soon! If you haven’t seen the whole fundraiser quilt, you should check it out- it turned out amazing! Click the picture below. I’ll see you SATURDAY at QuiltCon!!! Booth #315 at 3p, if I don’t pass you in the halls....

Quilter’s World Feb 2013 – 7-Patch Quilt

Quilter’s World Feb 2013 – 7-Patch Quilt

on Dec 29, 2012 in art gallery fabrics, Blog, pattern, Press, quilt | 3 comments

It happened. It finally happened!!! My quilt is one the cover of a magazine. Sure, it is the small inset circle image, but it totally counts! Making the cover of a magazine has been one of my goals ever since 2004. Seriously. I’ve made a back cover or two and even a table of contents, but now I can actually check off the COVER box. Wahoooooo!!! Over the Christmas holiday, my Mother In Law and myself were at Joanns. She asked if I had any quilts in any of the magazines on the rack in front of her. “I have one in Quilter’s World in February, but I don’t know if it is out yet.”?? So she looked around and says “This one?”?? OH MY GOSH! YES!!! When I arrived home, the Designer’s Copy and finished quilt were on my couch. They were delivered that afternoon. Best.Friday.Evah. So what did I make?? Something super easy and super fast and a tiny bit “Something About Mary” (Hitchhiker 7 minute abs scene). 9-patch, that sounds good, but what if someone came out with 8-patch or 7-patch? Well, that is what I did- I took the 9 patch and made it faster, simpler and more modern…. oh, and eliminated 2 patches. It is a contemporary traditional style of quilt, for sure. All the blocks are 15″ finished in the quilt design, and are all made using a strip piecing technique, just like in traditional quilting. I used Art Gallery Fabric solids, Pure Elements, for the entire design and my friend, Evelyn, did the square quilting design. You can see that much better in the magazine article. ((*The real quilt and magazine pattern are much bigger than the digital mock-up, pictured above.)) On newsstands, at craft stores and at quilt shops now! If you need a quick project, this one is for...

SEW IT ALL VOL 5

SEW IT ALL VOL 5

on Dec 4, 2012 in accessories, Blog, pattern, Press, recycle, sewing | 1 comment

Last year, I did a filming of Sew It All TV out in Golden Colorado. That was an amazing experience. The show was very cool behind-the-scenes and the editors of Sew It All were outstanding. I decided on the plane ride home that I would try to submit work to a “non-quilt” magazine for a change. I’m delighted to tell you that worked out very well. I submitted a bound wool hound’s tooth bag. The bag is made from recycled skirt from the thrift store and mixes techniques (in my opinion) since the bag is finished with a traditional quilt binding. I first showed you a version of the bag her on the blog, early last year. Not only is by bag, with 3 variation designs, rockin page 53, but Sew It All does a bio on their contributing authors, complete with a head shot. Hooray!!! I have a tiny Jen in the Author Section. And look at the great company I keep. Exciting times!!! The magazine is on news stands now and can also be ordered online at sewitallmag.com. It was great to work with the ladies over at Sew It All. Thank you for also featuring my pattern as one of the home page slide show pictures. Hooray hooray...

Drawstring Backpack and Girl Scouts

Drawstring Backpack and Girl Scouts

on Mar 9, 2012 in accessories, Blog, charity, pattern, sewing, Uncategorized | 0 comments

One of the popular tutorials on this site is the Drawstring Backpack. It is made from a fat quarter of fabric + ribbon. Check out this email I recently received from my friend in New York: “I just thought I would share with you what one of my Girl Scouts did to earn her Gold Award. Using your Fat Quarter Drawstring Backpack tutorial, she had volunteers (including myself, Ann D. and Alison V.) make 60 “Doodle Bags” and stuffed them with goodies. Erika was also working on her high school “Senior Project” and worked Art Therapy into the project, thus killing 2 birds with one stone. The bags were all donated to the Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center for the use of the young patients there. Betty’s Quilting donated all the fat quarters when the store was closing, this past year. And QuiltWoman.com helped subsidize the cost of printing the coloring book Erika designed (you can see it under the purchased coloring book). ” When I asked my friend the age range of the girl scouts she told me: “The sewers ranged from 17 up to their 60’s. Erika had a number of groups sew. Also, the woman’s guild at her grandmother’s church did a lot. Erika had girls in younger troops sew the pencil pouches.” How great is that?? I’m so happy the tutorial was able to help....
