QuiltCon Top Secret Quilt – Part One

on Jan 19, 2016 in benartex, Blog, business, northcott fabrics | 0 comments

Northcott Fabrics Going to QuiltCon! I am sending one custom project to QuiltCon 2016?for the Northcott Fabrics booth. It is going to be BRIGHT! I can only share a few sneak peeks – but let’s just say, I LOVE this solid color: And I do really love making circles easily. I’m applying medium-weight, sew-in interfacing to a couple of pieces. Who knows what it will look like…. I’ll be posting pictures of this quilt as QuiltCon 2016 approaches. In the mean time, search for?#northcottfabric?and #northcottquiltcon?in Instagram and on your favorite social media platforms to see more secret-y...

Half Square Triangle Quilt- Quilted

Half Square Triangle Quilt- Quilted

on Jan 11, 2011 in benartex, quilting | 1 comment

Before Thanksgiving I made up a small half square triangle quilt.  I had been stewing on how to quilt it.  Basically, I ended up going with “old faithful” in the middle of the quilt.  I’m getting pretty good at that nested paisley looking design.  I used a grey/smoke/white variegated quilting thread on the top.  Its subtle, but in my mind I’m totally branching out. (from just quilting in white only)   =) For the borders I tried something crazy- straight-ish lines with quilted cornerstones.  Sorry the picture is so washed out/blurry.  I did quilt using black all purpose Coats ‘n Clark in the black borders. And there it is in all its small-ish quilt glory.  I think it would be a good size for a couple 18″ dolls.  Or maybe even a good stroller blanket, since its narrow enough to fit down into the stroller without completely losing the kid in...

City Blooms Charm Quilt

City Blooms Charm Quilt

on Nov 22, 2010 in AccuQuilt Go, benartex, quilt, sewing | 0 comments

I finally dipped into another charm pack. This charm pack is called City Blooms by Benartex and is a bit older. I bought it a couple markets ago. The quilt went together really quickly with the help of the Seamingly Accurate Seam Guide for my half square triangles and the AccuQuilt GO! cutting system for the additional 5″ white/off-white squares. I framed the quilt with a tiny 1/2″ wide pink frame then a 2 1/2″ wide black frame. Its a pretty small quilt, but I like it just the same. Now I’m off to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday thinking up a way to quilt this little guy. Happy Thanksgiving to...

Summer Sewing for Kids

Summer Sewing for Kids

on Aug 30, 2010 in benartex, sewing | 6 comments

I’ve been working with my daughter on sewing this summer. It has gone surprisingly well. I wanted to “branch out” and show her how to strip piece a 9-patch block. Super easy technique if you’ve never tried it. So, one day she and her best girlfriend were over sewing. We all cut 4 1/2″ strips of fabric. I explained to them how we’d sew the strips, then cut the strips into squares. The girls seemed pretty excited and worked really quickly. Each girl had a different number of strips and a whole different method of how they should be laid out. Then the strips were complete. Roughly 30″ x 44″ (width of fabric). They were so proud. So I tell them “Now we cut this piece into about 9 strips.” … dead silence … Turns out, stripe-y quilts were a ga’thousand times better than checker-board quilts. And that was that. It was so funny to see their faces when I suggested they slash into the tops they had just created. We finished off one quilt by using the “birthing method” or “pillow-case method”, where the quilt doesn’t have a binding and the three layers are secured after the edges are finished. Here’s one of the quilters finishing up the perimeter before tying the layers. *Fabric by Jackie Clark for...

Baby’s Boxes Finished!

Baby’s Boxes Finished!

on Jun 13, 2010 in benartex, business, quilt, quilting | 0 comments

Super happy to report that this Baby’s Boxes quilt pattern is small enough to quilt on a home machine, with good results AND small enough to do it in a timely fashion. I forgot to share this picture with you in my last construction/assistants post– Its a shot taken by my 7yo, who really enjoys photography. I don’t know a ton about photography, but I understand some stuff. So I’m telling him how to get the foreground crisp and the background blurry… Depth of Field 101. I instructed him to lay on the floor, because the best shots are not always standing up pointing at something. He was so excited to get this: Of course getting a good shot of anything, for me, seems hit-or-miss. In fact, I had the finished quilt draped over the back of my couch and I heard all this giggling… The youngest was floored when I found him. This was the result of me saying “stay down so I can just snap the quilt, real quick.” Well… really, they DID help make it and probably should have their own photo, right? Now, I’m off to take the pair of quilts to the quilt shop. I do think the quilts look lovely together, all the fabric is by Jackie Clark for...

Studio Assistants

Studio Assistants

on Jun 11, 2010 in benartex, sewing | 1 comment

My studio assistants are logging more hours now that school is out for summer. I do think the boys (sorta pictured above) had a good time moving the fabrics around and helping me make the quilt squares/blocks/top. I presented it to them like solving a puzzle, which to a 7yo and 4yo is WAY more cool than making a pink girly quilt. In the photo above they are admiring their handiwork. The In The Nest color way for the Baby’s Boxes quilt pattern is coming along nicely. In fact, the whole top is finished and I need to get on with the quilting. Kreinik white shimmery quilting thread, of course! Hopefully I’ll have photos for you...

In The Nest Sample Sewing

In The Nest Sample Sewing

on Jun 10, 2010 in benartex, blogging others, business, Minneaplois Spring Market 2010, pattern, quilting, sewing | 1 comment

Right before Minneapolis Quilt Market I was racing the clock to sew up a sample of one of my pattern, Baby’s Boxes, using my friend, Jackie Clark‘s fabric collection, Baby Business, by Benartex. That line has a companion line of soft pinks called In The Nest. As you might have guessed, I am going to make a second sample (at a much SLOWER pace) for display made from the In The Nest line. When I say “slower pace” I really doubt it will be all that slow. The quilt will, hopefully, be traveling around in QuiltWoman.com’s trunk show. Though, I need to have the sample in my first ever retail booth at the Wichita Quilt Show, June 25th-27th. I’m super excited about the show and I’ve never set up my own booth before at a big quilt show. Its still two weeks off, and I’ve got lists everywhere. Wish me...

The Goofy One

The Goofy One

on May 26, 2010 in benartex, Minneaplois Spring Market 2010 | 0 comments

I have a couple pictures of me from market, that I haven’t yet shared on the blog. Of course, I showed you the super fun Quilting Hottie pin picture. The pin was from my friend Beth Helfter. She was giving a schoolhouse presentation for her new book. I got alot of comments on the pin, too. Above: This is Lacey Hill and myself in the QuiltWoman.com booth holding our bags. Her bag is made from her Sizzling Circle book. Lacey was also my roommate from a couple markets past. Good times. I think I’m talking in the photo… no news there… Then I went out shopping and browsing the market. I found the AQS booth. I was talking with one of the ladies in the booth and I commented how almost every year I buy the AQS quilting calendar and every year I seem to not be able to throw it away, since i LOVE the quilt images. Here’s me, looking goofy near the 2011 calendar. And of course, I had to run over to the booth that featured my Baby’s Boxes quilt and grab a picture. What an honor to have my work be displayed. THANK YOU!!! There’s still time to sign up for the Fat Quarter bundle give away!!! (You’ll be entering for a chance to win some of those fabrics used in the Baby’s Boxes quilt, pictured above.) Drawing will be May 28th,...

Finito

Ok, I did it! I finished the quilt top with the new Benartex Fabric! The line is called Baby Business by Jackie Clark. It turned out lovely, if I do say so myself. Its so soft and peaceful. Click on the image to see it larger. The pattern is Baby’s Boxes RD2-012 by ReannaLily Designs and distributed by QuiltWoman.com. The pattern will be shipping shortly, and will be available for pre-order through QuiltWoman.com very soon.Check out this adorable owl print- The owls are tossed all over, looking super cute to frame the quilt. You’ll definitely have to click that narrow little picture below to see them dancing around. And the quilting: I used one of the same quilting styles from my monster blanket. Its a stacked petal looking design that almost feels like a paisley. (The picture was taken without a flash, in order to show the natural light/shadows of the quilting.) Hopefully, this quilt sample will be on display at Spring Market. If you see it, drop me a line and let me know. Have a great Tuesday!!...
