Rockin Row Robin Quilted

Rockin Row Robin Quilted

on Jul 11, 2012 in Blog, Longarm Quilting Gallery, quilting, RowRobin | 1 comment

After only one short year… I finished my Rockin Row Robin Quilt. How do I know it was a year ago when I made the top???? Well, the blog hopping designers and myself decided to add the date to our blog button when we launched the quilt along: Ah, well, that was nice of us. HA! But all the UFO busters will be rejoicing as I finally quilted this little modern row quilt. My main hang-up was that I wanted it to be a “quilting sampler by rows” also, and I was nervous to try to quilt 6-7 different designs. I did one row of just meandered flowers. I used the free motion quilting motif tutorial here on the site. I used a sort of clamshell looking fill on both narrow hexagon rows. For the houses, I quilted some swirly wind and siding. I know… probably too much thought went into the house row. I did a simple meander one the rectangle block. In all the blue borders I made a line of… um… beads. I like to think of them as ocean pearls, because not a damn one of them turned out like a perfect circle. hahahah. I also didn’t cover the whole blue line with circles, so I don’t think that counts as the “pebble” motif. I have not yet cut off the threads on the back of the quilt. I didn’t pull the bobbin thread to the front, like you are supposed to either. ((shhhhh…quilt police might hear ya….))? But I thought I’d show you the quilt back, all the same. Oh, of course I used white-ish thread on the front. I wasn’t too concerned with the back, so I used grey thread back there. I thought if I used blue, I might get little blue spots or “pokies” all over the front of my quilt top. Now, we will never know… So this is my latest adventure on my Hinterberg frame with the Juki quilting machine, mid-arm quilting machine. Warm and Natural Cotton Batting. Tell a...

Ok, so all 5 row styles have been revealed for the Rockin Robin. I wanted to share with you how I assembled the quilt top. Remember, if you get sewing quickly, you’ll be entered to win prizes from a few of GREAT sponsors. Whoever finishes their Rockin? Robin quilt top and has a picture posted in the flickr group by Aug 22 is entered into the giveaway. That gives you a little over 2 weeks to get this top together!!! Really, you might even decided that these prizes are too good to pass up and start sewing this little baby on Aug 21st. Whatever floats your boat- as long as the top is done and in the flickr group on Aug 22. =) Three winners chosen at random: Prizes: Two $25 gift certificates for FQS and a Metro Market from Robert Kaufman fat quarter bundle (8) from The Fabric Shoppe To finish the top, I actually arranged my rows NOT in number order. I also found that when I laid them out, the top looked busy, thanks to my two background fabric choices. I decided I needed a place for the eye to rest, so I added in dark blue strips. The strips are cut 2″ and finish at 1 1/2″ wide. Rockin Robin Modern Baby Quilt The darker blue really helps ground the quilt. It’s perfect for a little guy. A BIG Thanks to all the designers that worked on the quilt-along and high-fives to everyone who has played along in the flickr group. Y’all turned out awesome quilts! Rockin Robin Quilt Along Row 5

Rockin Robin Quilt Along Row 5

on Aug 1, 2011 in Blog, blogging others, quilt, RowRobin | 3 comments

This is the FIFTH AND LAST row in the Rockin Robin Quilt Along. The row was based one “hexies” and is designed by Jen at ReannaLily Designs- wait, that’s me! This IS the tutorial page! (A pdf, printer-friendly version will be linked at the bottom of this post.) Wait ’til you see how all the previous rows have come together. Everyone in the Quilt Along is making such different (but similar) very cool quilts. I’m loving the colors. This row, in particular, has lots of wiggle room for customizing. I cannot wait to see your variations in the flickr pool. And check out the row made by each of the other designers- Lisa Marie from That Crazy Quilty Girl Melissa from Lilac Lane Heather and Megan from Quilt Story Anne Marie of Gen X Quilters GET THE HEX ROW TEMPLATES HERE! Hexagon Row: This row style is repeated twice in the Rockin Robin Quilt and the yardages given will allow you to make 2 rows, each 6 1/2″ x 48″. This set of rows is designed to work as a spacer in between the other 12 1/2″ x 48″ rows. Row size: 6 1/2? x 48 1/2? Materials: 20? solid background fabric 16 small prepared hexagons measuring 3? (template provided on blog) 6 large prepared hexagons measuring 4? (template provided on blog) Fusible Web product (OPTIONAL and only used for raw-edge fusible applique technique) *Hexagons are made from scrap fabrics or focus fabrics for your quilt design. Construction: Step 1. Make Hexagons Cut out the paper templates for the hexagons. Cut the fabric shapes, roughly 1/2? larger than the hexagon paper. Lay the paper template on the wrong side of the fabric hexagon and finger press the seam allowances towards the wrong side. Use a hand sewing needle and large basting stitch to temporarily tack the seam allowances, folded, to the paper template. Once the hexagon seam allowances are basted on each side, press with an iron to make the edges crisp. FUSIBLE OPTION: If you are a raw-edge fusible applique person, that is cool. Add the fusible to the wrong side of the fabric, per the manufacturer’s directions. Cut each hexagon to the exact cut size of the...

Rockin Robin Quilt Along Row 4

on Jul 25, 2011 in Blog, blogging others, quilt, RowRobin | 0 comments

This is the FOURTH row in the Rockin Robin Quilt Along. The row was based one “log cabins” and is designed by Anne Marie at Gen X Quilters. Get the full sewing tutorial HERE. This block was neat because Anne Marie left enough room in the tutorial for you to square up your blocks very square, off-center, or wonky, as mine are. I’m a fan of the wonk. (Hum… that doesn’t sound right…)? I changed some of the background/foreground color placements and I have this fun little row to show you. What’s that?? You wonder what this would look like as a whole quilt?? I thought you might! So I totally whipped one up for you in photoshop. Um, yeh, that would be pretty cool looking. Upload your versions of this row into the Rockin Robin flickr pool. Tell a...

Rockin Robin Quilt Along Row 3

This is the THIRD row in the Rockin Robin Quilt Along. The row was based one “houses” and is designed by Heather and Megan at Quilt Story. Get the full sewing tutorial HERE. Oh my gosh this row was so cute! These houses are perfect. You can make the big house or the little houses and vary whether they are on the top or the bottom. I just loved this row. Heck, it’s a whole neighborhood now. Yes, I totally ‘shopped my Row Houses (HA!) into a quilt, just to see how cute this would be as a whole quilt. Upload your versions of this row into the Rockin Robin flickr pool. And oh my gosh that flickr pool has tons of inspiration for the previous two rows as well. Y’all are really making these rows your own. Lots of unique projects going on over there. Tell a...

Rockin Robin Quilt Along Row 2

This is the SECOND row in the Rockin Robin Quilt Along. The row was based one “stars” and is designed by Melissa at Lilac Lane. Get the full sewing tutorial HERE. This row was pretty cool because the tutorial offers 3 different sized stars to make. You can make all of them or one of them and even arrange them however you like. Wait ’til you see some of the flickr variations for this row. I decided to make all giant FAT stars and vary the background colors between the blue and the grey. And I did a photoshop mock-up of my own row for what it’d look like if it was a whole quilt. Really, though, with the different sized stars- that’d make a very cool quilt top. But for now- here’s my little chubby stars photoshop quilt: Upload your versions of this row into the Rockin Robin flickr pool. Tell a...

This is the FIRST row in the Rockin Robin Quilt Along. The row was based one “rectangles” and is designed by Lisa Marie of That Crazy Quilty Girl. Get the tutorial HERE. I’ll share with you, my version of her row, in my color scheme. And you know what is really cool about this row?? It has 3D elements! That narrow border around the piecing is actually a 3 dimensional piece of folded fabric. Very neat. And here’s what it’d look like if you went crazy with this row and made it into a whole quilt- on its own. (photoshop’d, of course) Thanks for the first row, Lisa!!! Rockin Robin Fabrics

I showed you the fabric I was using for this blog-land project. Well, it is the Rockin Robin quilt-along, in case you missed the big announcement. For my quilt, I wanted it to read “boy” so I used two different background solids, a light blue and a very pale grey. Then I plan to use random bits of one of 4 pieces of this Kaffe Fasset fabric. I have had these 4 one yard pieces for about 3 years. I have no idea what I’m waiting to use them on, so I might as well start chopping into them, right?? The solid dark blue was a “just in case” fabric. I used it some how to pull the whole quilt together. You’ll see the progress here and on flickr. Let’s see what fabric you are using. Drop off the pic in the Rockin’ Robin flickr pool. Tell a...
