Hexagons Made Easy Sampler Quilt

Hexagons Made Easy Sampler Quilt

on Oct 6, 2015 in Blog, Hexagons Made Easy, quilt | 1 comment

Make the Hexagons Made Easy Sampler Quilt The 18 blocks featured in the book Hexagons Made Easy is perfect for a Sampler Quilt. What is a Sampler Quilt? This is a (generally) traditional quilt which features unique, different quilt blocks. Usually, a sampler quilt has no two blocks repeated. In the case of this sampler quilt, I had to repeat two blocks to create a total of 20 for a 4 x 5 block quilt. All the blocks in the book are based on an 15″ square background. Perfect! Now you can make only 20 blocks and have a BIG quilt. In fact, with the sashing (cut 2-1/2″) the quilt is 70″ x 87″. The new design wall helped tremendously with arranging such a large project. I choose a grey and black sashing to match the mock-up in the book. The grey is actually an IKEA flat sheet that has a bit of a chintz type sheen to it. Last seam and the quilt is finito! Finito? Yes. This quilt will now be part of my traveling “If a Person Werta” lecture and to keep the traveling suitcase lighter, I will not be quilting it. Hooray! It is finished and all the blocks have their own little framed...

Hexagons Made Easy Wallhanging

Hexagons Made Easy Wallhanging

on Dec 30, 2014 in Blog, business, classes, Hexagons Made Easy, quilt | 0 comments

Hexagons Hexagons Hexagons Phew – sorry, that is a bit blurry – I have a friend who is looking for a couple quilts to showcase some amazing machine quilting. So… um… yea, I’ll get in on that. She is the amazing machine quilter at Nacho Mama’s Quilt blog. I made up a wall hanging, in the same style as the Hexagons Made Easy workshop kit. This wall hanging features techniques from the book and has 20 hexagons arranged in a modern style. Why Modern? Well, there is lots of asymmetry, lots of negative space, and not so much “folk” elements (like blanket stitched hand applique shapes). That pretty much says modern to me. The fabrics in the wall hanging are by Denyse Schmidt for Joanns. First, I applied the facings to the hexagons, as described in Hexagons Made Easy & pressed my shapes. Then I arranged them & pinned them in place. Next up – straight stitch machine applique. Of course, it needs a quick trip to the iron, but this is the finished composition. The wall hanging is about 40″ square. I will not be quilting this myself, so I cannot wait to see what Danielle @ Nacho Mama Quilts will turn this into. Stay tuned. There’s plenty of space for something amazing. The small wall hanging isn’t too jazzy yet, but it is designed for the quilting to really make it spectacular. Just trust me on this one…...

You can grab one right now, over in the shop. This is what 30 un-assembled kits look like. Oh, bolts are so beautiful. Only thing lovelier might be those pre-cut hexagons. This is how kit making goes: Fold. Fold. Sort. Count. Fold. Layer. …shoot, where are the baggies…. Oh. Fold. Stuff. Count. Sort.   Like the other fabric kit, which is blues & purples by Art Gallery Fabrics, there is enough fabric in the kit to really mix up the project ideas as well. In the workshop we focus on the technique & brainstorm original design creations. The workshop is loosely based on the project in Hexagons Made Easy: Hexagon Wheel pg 42.   Wanna see fabrics in the pre-cut honeycomb stack? Sweetwater really knows how to make some fun fabrics.   I’ll see you at the next Hexagons Made Easy...

HEXAGONS MADE EASY – Launch Party!!!

HEXAGONS MADE EASY – Launch Party!!!

on May 1, 2013 in Blog, book, Hexagons Made Easy, SAMQG, trunk show | 0 comments

This weekend was the LAUNCH party for Hexagons Made Easy! It was a hoot. Friends from the San Antonio Modern Quilt Guild stopped by for the festivities. I had the party organized in to food, Sew Station, Door Prize Station, Charity Quilt Station and Trunk Show Station.?? Here’s some pics from the evening: Food I wanted to have foods that were shaped like hexagons. Turns out- that is kinda tricky. I thought I could have a build-your-own taco bar with the tortillas cut into hexagons. I later realized, I’d really like to eat the whole tortilla. :/? I did find some crackers and some oyster crackers, but my favorite was having the kids help add hexagon fondant to the cupcakes. Edible markers gave us a few stitching lines. Mmmm…. the roundest hexagons ever… mmmmmm….. buttercream….. What were we talking about?? Oh yes, the party- Sew Station My plan was to let my guests take a turn at the Hexagons Made Easy facing technique, one easy-peasy hexagon at a time. I had the step-by-step directions mounted on a foam core board for self guided learning on this super easy method. Huge thanks to MODA who provided a couple Honeycomb precuts for the event. Those were a big hit and a serious time savor for all things hexagons. Charity Quilt Station Once the hexagons were created, I wanted to have a “something” to do with the single finished shapes. I set up a charity quilt station. The guests take their hexagon and pin it onto a patterned background sheet. Think-= Pin The Tail On The Donkey for quilters. Anywhere the hexagon was placed is where it will be stitched down. It got quite hilarious since the more methodical guests were really planning where to place the shapes, when really, the next person may move the shape or put theirs on in some crazy fashion. It was very fun, I think. The Charity Quilt will be quilted by a San Antonio Modern Quilt Guild Member, Kim, and donated to Jeremiah’s Hope Rescue Shelter and Camp in Ukraine. SAMQG member, Kelly, works closely with that group and will have the finished baby quilt very soon. As the jokes about hexagon placement went on...

Where do you read Hexagons Made Easy? Some blog fan/followers may have seen these pictures a couple weeks ago on the ReannaLily Designs Facebook page or maybe the *new* instagram account. I had just received my first and only advance copy of Hexagons Made Easy when I found out that we had to travel out of state for a funeral. It was 9 hour drive each way and decided photographing my new little “baby” would be a great distraction. That worked. After we returned, I still wanted a few more pictures around town/s with my new favorite book. …. …. I may be carried away with this idea. I want to snap shots everywhere these days. Enjoy this craziness. {{Order your signed copy of Hexagons Made? Easy, HERE!.}}...
