Small Sewn Gift Paper Gift Tag
Notebook Paper FABRIC Gift Tag
This Small Sewn Gifts Sew Along project is a gift tag. Now, you might be thinking- How am I going to gift the TAG for the gift? Well, I’ve got great news, these are great for Teachers and Hostess Gifts. Both recipients would receive these gifts before the actual season. This project was inspired by a pin over on Pinterest, but after further inspection, I noticed that the pin was made out of paper. Well- that’s no fun for me. We need FABRIC. Let’s get to makin’ some gift tags.
Supplies
Red Thread
Blue Thread
Two scraps of white cotton at least 4″ x 6″
One batting scrap at least 4″ x 6″
Non-Permanent marking pens (Like Frixtion Pens)
Construction
Using the marking pen, mark off the lines of the notebook paper. I made my lines about 3/8″ apart. (Wide Ruled, as opposed to College Ruled notebook paper) Then, off to one side, draw the perpendicular line. You know what notebook paper looks like. I’ll trust ya. You do not have to use different colored marking pens, but I had them on hand so I figured: why not?
These will be your exact stitching lines.
Next, make a mini-quilt sandwich. Lets call this a slider. (ha. see what I did there? mini sandwich = slider)
Lay the unmarked fabric scrap on the work surface, then the batting, then the notebook paper fabric. Pin the three layers together with straight pins. NOTE: It is ok if the pieces are not exact sizes. You’ll be trimming the tag later.
Using the blue and red threads, stitch on the marked lines.
Pretty easy so far right? The next thing you’ll want to do is trim your piece to 3″ x 5″. Plan to have your red line be a nice distance, about 1″ to 3/4″ from your cut edge so it will look like paper. Use a straight stitch to sew 1/8″ from the cut edge all the way around the little tag.
Why only 1/8″ Why not something more durable? Well, its a tag. It might be used once ever. Let’s not over think this. You could do a satin stitch all the way around if you like. It is up to you. I like the straight stitch. It is fast.
The pictures do not show the piece “trimmed” just hang in there and pretend it does. =) Ooops.
Next step is the last step. Add a button hole. My machine has a buttonhole foot and stitch setting. You could skip all this and an eyelet, if you have eyelets and eyelet pliers on hand. For this, though, I have a 3/8″ button hole. First mark the hole placement. Mine is small and at an angle on the upper left of the gift tag. Apply the buttonhole in the manner you are most comfortable or following your sewing machine’s directions.
Once the hole is stitched, carefully cut the middle so that you can add ribbon.
Looks like you are all set. Grab some ribbon and set it up.
Now, could you have hand sewn the “TO” and “FROM” on the tag before the quilting step? Sure. Could you have rubber stamped the names with fabric permanent ink, if you are planning on using them yourself? Yep. I just chose to write my “to” and “from” for the sake of the speedy Small Sewn Gifts demo.
Go forth and make a bundle of these little babies and change up the ribbons for a festive collection. Don’t forget to post your projects on Dec 12! {{see below}}
