New Casual Dress
This weekend I sewed with my 13 yo. She wanted a dress. A wrap dress. The wrap was pretty critical. (Not entirely sure why, but that would probably be because I’m sooooo old and out-of-touch. Ah, 13yo’s…)
She picked out Simplicity 0216 and spandex/cotton blend jersey fabric from Joann’s. It is a great deep purple- wine color. The fabric is so soft. I don’t think they had fabric this soft when I was making clothes almost 20 years ago, in college. It was nice.
The fabric, for as nice as it was, is super slippery to use. Not an ideal “first dress” type fabric, though. Thankfully, it wasn’t my first dress.
Finding all the pattern pieces and getting them cut was not her favorite. But look at her go!
Now, since I hadn’t planned blogging about the dress, I don’t have any construction photos. (Quite unusual. She’s a teen on instagram and she doesn’t even have any photos. We must have been REALLY focused on stitching. Well, stitching and singing Imagine Dragon & Of Monsters and Men songs.)
The dress, despite the frustrating slippery fabric, turned out really well. Was it supposed to wrap the other way? Maybe. Did the asymmetrical design get cut with one right and one left? Yes. Feeling victorious? Yep.
We didn’t have to hem the full sleeves or the lower hem. It still looks casual enough and dress-y enough at the same time. Turned out very well and she wore it Monday morning to school.
