Free Motion Quilting Motif How-To

I recently quilted a baby quilt with a unique echoed swirl design and I thought I’d show you how I made that design with my sewing machine.  (The how-to is done with Sharpie on Paper.  Do NOT put Sharpie on your quilt, of course.  Those should be stitching lines- but I’m sure you totally already know that.)

Step 1:

Draw horizontal lines, with a small swirl every 4-6 inches or so.  Make a second, parallel line, with swirls, but stagger their placement.  The second row, and subsequent rows, will need to be about 4-6 inches below the first.

Step 2:

Make an echo stitch, or stitching line that follows the same shape, 1/4″- 1/2″ away from the top edge of these swirled lines.  I made two echo stitching lines.

Step 3:

Repeat Step 2, echo stitching two rows along the bottom edge of the swirled lines.

Step 4:

Fill with pebbles in between the two echoed swirled lines.
