Workshop with Jacquie from Tallgrass Prairie Studio
I’m thinking if you read modern sewing blogs, you have heard of Jacquie and her site, Tallgrass Prairie Studio. I was thrilled to learn that my huge traditional quilt guild had Jacquie as a guest speaker. Of course, that meeting got snowed out and the workshop that went with the lecture was rescheduled. BUT this week was the reschedule week for the workshop!!!! Hoooray!!!!
We started out learning her improvisational style as it relates to basic log cabin and court house step blocks. She even brought a few scrap bins (which were FLOWING OVER with amazing designer scraps) for the workshop members to use, with their own yardage, and enjoy.
I might have been a bit too excited to find that Geo Grand scrap in the bin! I grabbed it and a couple solids to ease into the free-piecing technique before I started in on my “real” fabrics. (If you don’t know, it is the brown “C” looking fabric in that green block.) Then I started in slowly on what would be a 4-block red+grey+aqua quilt. {{Kona Solids}}
This is me working on a flannel design wall. I currently do not use a design wall in my studio, but folks, I think that is all about to change. For the workshop we just had a sheet of flannel taped to the wall- it worked beautifully. I cut my strips, guessed at angles, stitched willy-nilly, and hoped for the best. My plan was to grow 4 giant blocks made in her wonky log cabin style, then square them up at home and stitch them together.
I did screw up a bit of the piecing in the upper left block, but at the end of the day, I’m cool with it. Hopefully you guys don’t mind.
Now I need to decided on quilting thread and knock it out. At the workshop we talked a bit about thread and I think I might jump in and quilt this little baby in RED. Yes, RED. ….um or maybe dark grey/smoke… Stay tuned.
And you can read more at my friend’s blogs. They are in the Wichita Modern Quilt Guild AND at the workshop. Here’s Kyle’s blog and Maegan’s blog.
That was easily one of the best sewing days/workshops I’ve attended. I cannot wait to attend more! Thank you so much for putting on a great class!

Your quilt looks great. I think you should take a risk and quilt it in a color.
