WMQG-Silk Paper
We had a good time at the Wichita Modern Quilt Guild this week!
One of our members, Kerri, led a demonstration on making silk paper. I had honestly never heard of silk roving or the notion you could make it into paper. It was very neat. Of course, the process is ridiculously messy, so we got a very solid over-view of the paper making, without making a huge mess in our host quilt shop.
Here are some of the supplies you’ll need for the process. We learned that Soy Silk was much more affordable than traditional silk.
Stretch the roving across the net. It looks fluffy, but once it’s wet and glued, it turns very very flat.
Check out those really cool papers! They are all fiber. The papers could be used in art quilts and paper crafts. It’s probably not a good idea to wash the fibers as it may wash out all the glue (which is the only thing holding the fibers together.)
Kerri handed out pre-made bookmarks as a gift. Oh man, I’m so going to stitch those into something. The paper turned out beautiful.
All this inspiration, and that doesn’t even include the show’n'tell and secret sister gifts! It was a very good night! I’ll show you a few of the projects:
Man, I love guild day!
