Wonky 9-Patch Quilt AccuQuilt GO! Compatible FREE Modern Quilt Pattern

((Longest title in the history of ReannaLily Designs blog!))
I was dreaming up a way to have a modern quilt, without the liberated, improvised quilting methods. I do enjoy those methods quite a lot, but it dawned on me that many people in the quilting community like a solid, straight-forward recipe. And the result of the brainstorming is this Wonky 9-Patch Quilt.

*All seam allowances for this project are 1/4″

Watch the quick little youtube bit on how to make the 9-patch units into tilted, crooked perfect 5″ blocks. I’ll show you how to use the AccuQuilt GO! cutting system and 5″ die OR use a ruler to get the off-kilter shape needed for the quilt design.

Finished size: 58” x 58”

Blocks needed: 16

Here’s the fabric requirements and directions for piecing the quilt top.

Cut pieces (for the entire quilt)

80 solid color squares 2 1/2″ (assorted green and blue)

64 background squares 2 1/2” (white)

16 Piece A- 1 rectangle 3″ x 5″ (white)

16 Piece B- 1 rectangle 3″ x 7 ½” (white)

16 Piece C- 1 rectangle 5 1/2″ x 7 ½” (white)

16 Piece D- 1 rectangle 5 1/2″ x 12 ½” (white)

Sashing- (shown in grey)

14 pieces 2 1/2” x 12 1/2”

2 pieces 2 1/2” x 40 1/2”

2 pieces 2 1/2” x 26 1/2”

3 corner stones 2 1/2” (shown in blue)

Borders- (shown in grey)
Cut parallel to the selvage edge OR piece a couple 2 1/2″ strips together to achieve this required length.

2 pieces 2 1/2” x 54 1/2”

2 pieces 2 1/2” x 58 1/2”

Binding (shown in blue)

6 strips 2 1/2” x width of fabric

Step 1. Build the 9-patch blocks and cut them cattywompus into 5″ cut squares. (Yeh, that’s a technical term.)

Step 2. Build each block by sewing the background setting to the 5″ block in the alphabetical order described below. Press the seam allowances after you add each piece, towards the white.

Step 3. Add the short 12 1/2″ long sashings in between 4 blocks to form rows. Press the seam allowances towards the grey. *Make sure you rotate the blocks 90 degrees or more to give a more random look to the quilt.

Step 4. Build the 3 horizontal sashing strips using the remaining grey strips.

Row 1: 40 1/2 + Corner Stone Square + 12 1/2
Row 2: 12 1/2 + Corner Stone Square + 40 1 /2
Row 3: 26 1/2 + Corner Stone Square + 26 1/2

Step 5. Next, add the horizontal grey sashings to the lower edge of each of the first 3 rows. Press the seam allowances towards the grey.

Step 6. Join the 4 rows. Press the seam allowances towards the grey. Add the side border strips to the quilt top, then the top and bottom border strips. Press towards the grey.

Step 7. Baste- Quilt- And Bind using the continuous binding method on this blog tutorial page.

Here’s my quilt, made in solid fabrics- (3) greens, (2) blues, white + grey.

And there you go. That’s the quilt. It’s not too tricky and really quick to make. I hope you try it.
